Supervise

Roles in construction projects: analysis and terminology, by Hughes, W. and Murdoch, J. R, published in 2001 by the University of Reading, defines supervise as: ‘Comparing progress with a predetermined plan and bringing about some sort of response to the situation.’

It is important to note that inspection and supervision are very different terms. For example, site inspectors do not supervise the site works as this might be perceived as taking some responsibility for the works, when in fact the contractor is responsible for them. Site inspectors merely inspect the works in order to give an independent view.
